In my last article, I talked about how it’s important to consider Estate Planning in your 20s and 30s because you can’t predict the future, but you can plan for it. On March 4th, 2019 we lost star Luke Perry, who suffered a serious stroke and he left his family with the decision to pull him from life support. Perry executed the proper legal documents with a Living Trust, so that his family could make that decision for him when it was determined he could not recover from the stroke.
In 2015, Perry started creating the proper legal documents as he discovered that he had precancerous growths following a colonoscopy. The cancer scare prompted Perry to prepare a power of attorney, heath care directive, and to protect his assets for his family. In Luke Perry’s case, if his children are his only beneficiaries it will be determined that his fiancé will not be entitled to inherit anything unless he had an amendment completed with his trust.
As we mourn the loss of our loved ones, raise awareness for stroke prevention, colorectal screening, prostate screening, breast screening and to not postpone the creation of a living trust. Tragedy can happen at anytime and its important for us to put our family first and give them guidance with a properly drafted Estate Planning Revocable Living Trust.
